the marquis de Carabas

[After waking up from his coma, the marquis de Carabas lies low for several days. He considers the nature of this place, the things that it does, the ways that it manipulates its passengers. The ways that these passengers theorize about the nature of the Barge in order to make some sense of a nonsensical place. Also: the fact that people in general are so eager for sense.]

[He considers the fact that he is on his own, that the book he was brought has been read through several times, that his eyes hurt and he's tired, but unwilling to sleep. Also: that people do like their theories.]

[And he decides to collect some. Or at least perform a social experiment.]

[He leaves his door ajar, revealing the interior to the level 4 hallway. There is no odor; there's also no natural light, though he does leave one lamp burning in the door to the left tunnel.]

[Then he leaves. He walks, and occasionally circles back to his door to see if anything's been caught.]
