It seems we've made landing. I have no authority to advise one way or another, of course, but if I did have it, I'd suggest passengers stick to the beach and leave exploration of the island to more experienced fighters.

Of course, if you're stupid enough to do anything else I can't be held responsible. Again: no authority. It's nice how that works out sometimes.

Really, though, I'd suggest engaging with the enemy as soon as possible. Otherwise, they're liable to get the drop on us.

[The marquis - as he calls himself - or Boots - as he's occasionally called - or other four-letter words that have occasionally been applied, it's all up to you - he does not stick to the beach. There was never any chance that he might. Instead, he makes a beeline for the center of the forest, circles around, and makes a wide sweep. He wants to cover all ground, just in case.]

[Loki is not his type of person, really. He's loud. He's entitled, but not in a tremendously clever way. And yet he does have a certain style that can, in certain circumstances, be effective.]

[He also has one very specific enemy, his warden, and anyone who interacts with her positively seems in danger of retribution. It's a blunt, but interesting, tactic. Which is why the marquis seeks him out. Just to test, see what he's like.]

That makes three of us. Slipperier'n a fishbladder, as ever. That lot got anything worth breakin' a sweat for? Aside from you, that is. There still a price on your 'ead out to Tortuga?

They have plenty. Not nearly as much of extravagance as I'd hoped, but plenty of necessities and a few riches.

As to the price - if you don't know, I'm not telling.

[She laughs her raucous, dirty laugh; when, if she decides to turn against the Marquis, they both know it won't be for any reason as mundane as a price.]

Anyone I should keep a weather eye on 'specially, is there?

I'm hardly going to tell you that. You might avoid getting into those scrapes you enjoy so much.

[Loki spends little time in public places on the Barge; he'd rather be alone and in private. As the Barge has precious little space for privacy, normally that means he's in his own cabin and not to be seen by anyone.

But the Marquis is lucky today, and he's managed to find Loki outside of his cabin. He's on the deck right now, sitting in the garden against the stars. The leaves are black around him, silhouetted in the bright heatlamps. He sits, back straight and tall, on a bench. He's got a narrow stick of black chalk in his hand and an expensive-looking book of blank vellum pages on his lap. In the book he seems to have been chalking strange symbols, curving or angular, often complicated, and surrounded by minute notes. But he looks up and places the chalk down between the pages as the Marquis approaches. He does not look belligerent, but his expression is closed and alert. He stares into the other man's face.]

I do not believe I have had the pleasure.

[Everything about him is interesting. The most interesting part is how deliberately he appears disinterested. The marquis smiles, as he does, predatorily.]

No. You haven't.

You're the liar.

[Loki's casual manner is nothing if not deliberate. To most he would seem calm, but to the most perceptive people of the Barge it is clear that under the unruffled exterior Loki's senses are all tuned intently upon the stranger. His body may appear relaxed and almost languid, but muscles in his torso and tensed and he is ready to jump up and fight with all he has at the merest hint of aggression. His expression is fake, too. He's not politely interested; he's waiting for the other shoe to drop.]

A name that many have given to me. You may use it, if you wish.

[Actually, he'd rather not be called that. It ruins the image - a liar cannot be expected to be very good at his job if everyone knows about it. But he doesn't argue. That will only spread the name around faster.]

But you must give me something to call you, if you mean to talk.

If there's something you'd prefer to be called, I will of course call you that. But it seemed the most . . . apropos.

You may call me the marquis de Carabas. I'd bow, but -

[Well. He doesn't want to in this particular instance. Besides, a liar would see a lie, even a gesture that's a lie. Bows, from him, convey no respect - only mockery.]

A marquis should bow to a prince, or a king. But I am neither your prince nor your king, so you need not.

[He shifts. It's just a subtle tactic to move the balance of power. It doesn't always work, but he refuses to be spoken down to.]

Why is it that you have come to see me, Marquis?

I bow when I like.

[And looks at who he likes, including kings. Princes, even, sometimes.]

You're very loud in your dislike of certain individuals. I was interested to find out why you would be quite that loud.

[Impertinent. A noble like this would be killed for such casualness, if he had his way. But he does not have his way; he swallows his pride, for now. The time will come when all of that can be rectified.]

I am loud because I have much to say to them, and of them. Of what concern is it to you?

It's of concern to me. Haven't you been paying attention?

[Eyeroll. Merlin. Duh.]

[No, he really has no idea why any of his hate-mongering should concern this Marquis. And he doesn't like to guess unless he knows he's right already.]

I cannot be expected to pay attention to every lost soul aboard this ship. So, no, I have not.

Marquis, my friend [or as close to friends as paranoid schemers come] what would a favor cost me. There's an associate aboard your ship. I've just found out.

I just need to know who is aboard the crew, so that I might instigate a proper reaction.

Good associates are hard to come by, and I will do what I can to keep them from being hung from the neck until dead. [Even if that means provoking fights between people he doesn't care about.]
